How to Overcome Struggles in Life

Every day we will face many struggles that sometimes can lead us to disappointment and a hopeless situation. This article is a sharing from two IMAN writers during the launch session of their latest book. Sharifah Nadirah and Ayesha Syahira.

Writing helps in dealing with mental struggles

Actually, when I first started writing the first few pages of Healing the Heart, at that moment I was really down. I managed to climb up the ladder back. Sometimes my writing can help me to be my coping mechanism to survive. So when I write and then it suddenly gives me some sort of comfort and also peacefulness. And from reading our own words we acknowledge this is how I feel, honestly, it helps a lot. I think it also helps many people out there who are facing life problems and all because I also received a sharing in my DM, they say that writing helped them a lot. Some of them also had written their ebooks, and some who publish their book told me that they actually love writing.

They said when they write, they feel like they’re being themselves.

So from that, I think that is also one of the most helped me to climb up the ladder again. And then when at the end of finishing that book, I feel like there’s some sort of like oh, I will live again. The book has finished and parts of me which are broken, they all had heels.

Everything happens for your own good.

So I always hold this and I want everybody to listen and hold this to your heart. Whatever that Allah does in this dunia, it is only for your own good. It has to be for you and it is never against you. It has to be for you. Even when you don’t understand, even when you feel like ‘man, why am I the one being tested?’ It has to be for you. Just take time, sit back, and think about the worst or the biggest problem you are facing. Think about it and look at how it has made you the person you are today. And if we want to sit down and talk about it, I believe everyone can share their one black or dark moment in their life. But it will somehow rather change you into something. Even myself, I went through many things in my life.

When you went through something hold this ayah, Al Baqarah, 286

 لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity.

Whatever you went through, it means Allah trusts you can go through all that. So when Allah trusts you why are you doubting yourself? Hold to this ayah and say to yourself that you can do this. Embrace it.

In the hadis prophet Muhammad said ‘Allah said If you come to me walking, I go to you running.’ Then you have to trust it. I come back to Allah. If I make my prayer, I’m going to read my Quran, I’m going to make taubah, I’m going to read my dua, and then I trust Allah will come back and run to me. I want to trust that. Then you said to Allah, I trust you. You say you’re running back to me. I want to have that. That’s something that I fought so much in my life.

I went through the same stuff as before, but I put that in my head. I keep on reminding myself it cannot be used. And this life temporarily, end of the day, our endgame is for Jannah. Now, if I’m going to do something for Jannah, make sure I’m doing something worth it. If I have to go through a little bit of this. I’ll go through it. I’ll smile, I‘ll embrace that. If I need to cry then I cry. Being close to Allah does not mean you suppress your feelings. If you feel bad, go and talk to Allah because the one that heals your heart is Allah.

You only need one person to keep you moving

I have one moment during my practical time that I was unstable mental and physical. Every time I show up was half-hearted. During those moments, panic attacks and anxiety attacks always happened to me. I feel suffocated. What brought me back at that moment, is when there is one senior optometry. She was really kind to me. She was caring and understanding. She calls me to her room and has a conversation heart to heart. Just because of her caring and kindness give me strength and keep me moving in life.

Surah Al-Asr changed My World

How I look at my watch a different way now.

Allah said in Quran in Surah 103 Al-‘Asr, Ayat 1-3

By the time! . Indeed! Man is in a state of loss. Except those who have faith and do righteous deeds, and counsel each other to hold on to truth and counsel each other to be steadfast.

Every single time when I look at my watch, I said ‘this one cost me like RM1000’. I invest so much in my watch. How come I am late for prayer? Our watch or phone has all this google calendar, all this alertness alarm and adzan but we are still late for prayer. So we are the most wasted according to that Surah Al-Asr.

When we talk about time, you cannot pass it. Allah gives you like 24 hours for everyone. But that’s one thing that we can reflect upon is the time that we submit to Allah. We can do so many things, but when we give a little bit to Allah, is like a rush one. Don’t let our watch or phone testify against us on the day of judgement. So I think when I wrote this reflection, it hits me the most because when we talk about time, we don’t really appreciate the time. We just take it for granted because it’s free. It’s something that we don’t have to pay for it’s.
